Back in 2003, this message was being forwarded from inbox to inbox. Since then, social media versions of the message have also circulated.

Over the years, I’ve had a number of enquiries about the circulating message. But, in fact, it is just a joke. The image above is attached to the email and works as a visual punchline.

Sumatra Island Tsunami Wave Photograph Hoax

The photograph does not depict a tsunami wave nor was it taken in Sumatra. In fact, the “wave” shown in the photograph is a large dust storm that hit the town of Griffith, NSW Australia in 2002.
