What the fact-checkers found

According to a report that is currently circulating via social media, a baby has been found alive on the 16th floor of Grenfell Tower, 12 days after the building was destroyed in a devastating fire that claimed 79 lives.

The story claims that, after hearing crying on the 16 floor of the burnt out building, fire investigators discovered the baby who was subsequently rushed to a hospital.

However, the claims in the report are callous and nasty lies designed to drive traffic to a trashy click-bait website. The claim that a baby has been found alive at the Grenfell Tower fire scene is untrue. There are no credible news reports that support the story in any way. Nor have authorities tweeted about the baby’s rescue as claimed in the fake report.

The bogus story uses the name of a real Grenfell Tower fire investigator to make its claims seem more believable.

The story comes from a fake-news website that tries to trick visitors into believing that it is associated with UK news outlet Metro. It calls itself “Metro” and uses the word “metro” in its web address. However, the site has no connection to the real Metro website.

To add extra impact to the fake story, its creators have added the familiar “Breaking News” graphic often used by BBC News.

If this fake news story comes your way, do not click on it. And let the person who posted it know that the story is untrue.
