What the fact-checkers found

Not surprisingly, the claims in the report are nonsense. The story has been published by various pseudo-news outlets that specialize in churning out spurious nonsense. And, these outlets lifted the story from an original version published on the fake-news ‘satirical’ website World News Daily report.

According to a report that is going viral via social media, an Indian man named Mashashta Murasi has reached the age of 179 years. The message claims that he is the oldest person in history and has lost hope of dying a peaceful death.

The report features a picture supposedly depicting the 179-year-old man.

But, of course, the claims in the story are utter nonsense. There is no man, in India or anywhere else, that has reached that age. The story is simply made up.

Versions of the story have been posted to various nonsense-filled websites that masquerade as news outlets. And these outlets took the story from a February 2014 post on the fake-news website World News Daily Report. The site bills itself as satirical and includes the following disclaimer :

World News Daily Report is a news and political satire web publication, which may or may not use real names, often in semi-real or mostly fictitious ways. All news articles contained within worldnewsdailyreport.com are fiction, and presumably fake news.

Nothing published on World News Daily Report should be taken seriously.

For the record, the person with the longest confirmed human lifespan was a French woman, Jeanne Louise Calment, who reached the age of 122 years, 164 days.

Given the amount of fake-news stories that now circulate, it is wise to verify any ‘news’ reports that come your way before you share them with your friends. Searching a news portal such as Google News will usually reveal of a circulating story is true.
