‘Get a $200 Nike Gift Card’ Scam Message
The original site is no longer online; links go to the Internet Archive copy.
What the fact-checkers found
According to a message that is circulating via social media, you can get a $200 Nike gift card just by clicking and sharing a link.
The message urges you to “share ASAP” with your friends and claims that you will win the gift card if 4 people share from the link you send them.
However, the message is a scam and it has no connection to Nike. No amount of sharing will win you any gift cards.
By tricking people into sharing, the scammers ensure that their fake giveaway post spreads rapidly and is thus seen by many new potential victims.
If you follow the link in the post and share as instructed, you will then be told that you must visit various survey websites as a means of validating your prize entry.
The survey sites will promise the chance to win further prizes in exchange for completing surveys and providing your name and contact details.
But, any information you provide will be shared with dodgy marketing companies who will subsequently inundate you with unwanted phone calls, emails, text messages, and letters promoting a range of products and services.
Survey scams like this one are very common. If you receive one, do not share or click on it.
